New Jersey has four universities offering accredited nutrition and dietetics programmes and one well-defined community college transfer route at Middlesex College. Two other listings, a Camden County College dietetic technician programme and an independent dietetic internship, could not be confirmed as open to new students. Resident undergraduate costs at the three public universities run from about $17,286 a year in tuition at Rutgers (before roughly $6,450 in mandatory fees) to $17,810 at Montclair State and $18,300 at Rowan, both including fees, while graduate tuition runs from $929 per credit at Rutgers to $999.02 at Montclair State and $1,135.50 at Rowan.
The structures differ more than the price does. Rutgers runs an accredited didactic programme and its own graduate internship, which ACEND lists at candidacy status. Rowan awards a bachelor’s and master’s together through a single coordinated programme. Saint Elizabeth teaches nutrition as a business. Choosing well here means matching the structure to how you want to work, not just picking the nearest campus.

Which New Jersey Nutrition Program Fits You
Choose Rutgers if you want both stages at the state flagship. Its accredited didactic programme feeds its own graduate internship, which runs four consecutive terms with a minimum of 1,046 supervised practice hours across metropolitan New Jersey, and the coursework counts toward a Master of Science in Nutritional Sciences. Choose Rowan if you want the degrees bundled. Its coordinated master’s programme awards the bachelor’s and master’s together with 1,000 supervised practice hours, so one admission carries you to exam eligibility. Choose Saint Elizabeth if you intend to work for yourself. Its Entrepreneurial Nutrition Practice programme is unusual anywhere — 38 to 40 credits over 22 months in hybrid format, with more than 1,000 practice hours, aimed at practitioners building their own businesses rather than entering hospital employment. Choose Montclair State if you want a choice of master’s tracks near New York. One MS in Nutrition and Food Science offers a general concentration and a Dietetics concentration with 1,000 practice hours, at a flat $999.02 per credit with no out-of-state surcharge; dietetics entry asks a 3.2 GPA. New Jersey Nutrition Schools
Rutgers University
Rutgers runs nutrition through the Department of Nutritional Sciences in its School of Environmental and Biological Sciences, on the New Brunswick campus.

One requirement here is stricter than most and worth knowing before you enrol: Rutgers students must score 70 percent or higher on every KRDN benchmark assessment in upper-level coursework to receive the verification statement. Passing the courses is not sufficient on its own.
The internship places interns at sites across metropolitan New Jersey and integrates coursework counting toward the master’s, so the graduate degree and practice hours arrive together. The separate online clinical nutrition master’s is worth distinguishing — it is 16 months and largely online, but remote students must be willing to relocate for the supervised learning clerkships, which happen in acute and long-term care settings.
Rutgers also runs a defined transfer route: Middlesex College students completing the two-year Dietetics Transfer associate move 60 credits into the Rutgers bachelor’s and finish the degree plus verification statement in two further years of full-time study.
Rowan University
Rowan in Glassboro offers the state’s clearest coordinated route.

Bundling the two degrees means a student admitted to the coordinated programme reaches exam eligibility without a separate internship application. That is the single most valuable structural feature available in New Jersey, given how competitive internship placement remains nationally.
The GPA requirements mark the difference between the two entry points: 2.0 for the bachelor’s, 3.0 for the coordinated programme. Admission to the coordinated route is competitive, so treat the bachelor’s alone as a real possibility and plan accordingly. The dietetics-concentration bachelor’s is awarded only together with the master’s, or as an exit degree, and Rowan’s own documents disagree on whether the graduate year is 18 or 30 credits.
Montclair State University
Montclair State runs nutrition and food science in northern New Jersey, within reach of the New York metropolitan area.

Entry to the Dietetics concentration of the bachelor’s requires a 3.2 Montclair GPA with no grade below C, checked each January and May; freshmen and transfers start in another concentration.
Montclair runs one master’s degree with two concentrations, and confusing them is easy. The General concentration is a nutrition-science degree that does not lead to RDN eligibility; students seeking the credential are directed to the Dietetics concentration, which is available standalone or as an accelerated 4+1 BS/MS in which 12 graduate credits count toward both degrees.
The GPA gates differ by entry point: 3.2 for currently-enrolled students applying to the standalone MS-Dietetics, 3.4 for the accelerated BS/MS, and 3.2 for external applicants, who apply through DICAS with a verification statement or declaration of intent. Internal applicants use a Graduate School Fast-App in the spring of their final undergraduate year.
The dietetics track is changing. ACEND lists Montclair’s dietetic internship as closing, with the final cohort starting in August 2026 and voluntary closure effective August 31, 2027, and its October 2025 decisions list approval to reorganize into a Future Education Model Graduate Program. We found no candidacy or accreditation decision for that Graduate Program, so confirm its status before applying. See the Montclair State profile.
Saint Elizabeth University
Saint Elizabeth in Morristown offers graduate nutrition with a framing found almost nowhere else.

Applicants apply through DICAS with two recommendation letters, a personal statement, and ServSafe certificates. The FAQ says a DPD verification statement is not required, though the admissions page still mentions one, so confirm before applying. It is built for people intending to run private practices or nutrition businesses rather than take hospital posts — a genuinely different destination from every other accredited programme in New Jersey.
The online community nutrition master’s is not on the current program list and carries no ACEND statement, so confirm with the university that it is still enrolling before planning around it. Transfer routes and closed or unconfirmed listings
Middlesex College in Edison runs an Associate of Science in Dietetics – Transfer designed to move 60 credits directly into the Rutgers bachelor’s under a written agreement with Rutgers Nutritional Sciences, which asks a 3.0 GPA and a C or better in major courses. At about $6,555 a year for a county resident against $17,286 a year in tuition alone at Rutgers, the saving is substantial, but the agreement runs only through May 31, 2027, so confirm its status before relying on it. Camden County College in Blackwood has run a 64-credit Dietetic Technology associate degree that prepares graduates for the dietetic technician (DTR) exam rather than the RD credential. Its program page has been removed from the college’s site and ACEND’s live directory no longer lists a Camden program, although a state association list and third-party directories still do, and only one of its program-specific courses shows Fall 2026 sections. We did not build a profile because we could not confirm it is still enrolling; ask the college directly. Its per-credit rate is $220 in-county on the current rate sheet.
Komplete Business Dietetic Internship was an independent, largely distance internship for didactic graduates, ACEND-accredited from January 2024 after candidacy from 2020. It announced it was closing effective December 2025, and ACEND recorded a voluntary closure with a teach-out plan, so it is no longer an option for new applicants and we did not build a profile.
How to Choose a Nutrition Program in New Jersey
New Jersey pays dietitians well
Rutgers’ School of Health Professions cites an average annual wage of about $80,630 for dietitians and nutritionists, attributed to Bureau of Labor Statistics data. We could not confirm the earlier claim that New Jersey ranks second among states, or a $82,330 figure, on Rutgers’ pages, and the ranking Rutgers cites is a 2023 College Factual listing rather than a 2025 one. Treat the ranking as marketing, but the wage is worth weighing against the state’s higher tuition and living costs.
Three different structures, three different destinations
Rutgers gives you a research university and a metropolitan internship. Rowan gives you certainty by bundling the degrees. Saint Elizabeth prepares you to work for yourself. These are not interchangeable, and the choice should follow the kind of practice you want rather than proximity or ranking.
Watch what a master’s actually qualifies you for
Montclair State’s MS in Nutrition and Food Science has two concentrations, and only the Dietetics concentration is the credential route. Saint Elizabeth’s catalog has listed two master’s degrees with different practice components, though only the entrepreneurial programme appears on its current program list. In both cases the degree name is not sufficient information — ask what the specific programme produces.
Community college transfer is well supported here
The Middlesex to Rutgers route is more clearly defined than most articulation arrangements, with a specified 60-credit transfer and a two-year completion at Rutgers, though the current agreement expires May 31, 2027 and Middlesex and Rutgers pages cite different GPA thresholds. Given New Jersey’s public tuition sits above the national average, two years at community college rates is a meaningful saving on the same verification statement.
The master’s requirement changed in 2024
Since January 1, 2024, the Commission on Dietetic Registration has required a master’s degree in any field, plus a verification statement from an ACEND-accredited programme, to sit for the RDN exam. New Jersey is well positioned for this: Rutgers integrates the master’s into its internship, Rowan bundles both degrees, and Saint Elizabeth’s entrepreneurial programme is graduate level throughout.
Nutrition Licensure and Credentials in New Jersey
New Jersey requires CDR registration, or proof of meeting equivalent education and supervised practice standards, to qualify for state recognition. The state follows the national baseline for supervised practice hours rather than setting its own higher threshold.
The CDR requirements apply regardless: an ACEND verification statement, a master’s degree, supervised practice, and a passing exam score. Confirm current New Jersey requirements with the state before relying on them.
Before applying anywhere in New Jersey, verify three things directly with the school: whether the master’s you are considering actually leads to the credential, since Montclair State’s General concentration does not, whether Camden County College’s dietetic technician programme is still enrolling, since its program page has been removed, and — if Rutgers is your choice — that you understand the 70 percent KRDN benchmark requirement, which governs whether you receive the verification statement at all.
