Choose URI’s graduate programme if the credential is the goal, and you can wait. It is an accredited Future Education Model programme integrating classroom learning with supervised experiential learning across Rhode Island healthcare institutions, and it is the state’s only accredited route that includes the practice hours — but URI is pausing new admissions for the 2026-2027 cycle, with recruiting expected to resume in 2027-28 for a Fall 2028 start.
Choose Johnson & Wales if you want nutrition taught alongside culinary arts. Besides the dietetics bachelor’s, it offers a B.S. in Culinary Nutrition (no RD route) built on a culinary arts or baking and pastry foundation. ACEND lists the didactic programme as accredited since June 2000 with a term ending June 2030, but it has been on a reduced term since July 2025 and the length of that term was not found, so confirm the current end date.
Choose URI’s bachelor’s if cost matters. As Rhode Island’s public university it carries in-state rates well below the private alternative, for accredited coursework producing the same verification statement.

The rotation structure is published in unusual detail, which makes it easy to judge. Students complete 15 weeks of inpatient medical nutrition therapy including seven weeks in a large tertiary care facility, seven weeks of food service management with university or hospital options, seven weeks of community rotations covering SNAP-Ed, long-term care, and private practice outpatient counselling, five weeks of a specialty rotation in critical care, paediatrics, outpatient counselling or community, and a one-week student-initiated self-management rotation. The fourth semester focuses primarily on didactic coursework.
URI is currently pausing new admissions to this MS for the 2026-2027 cycle. Its own program page states no new students will be admitted for a Fall 2027 or Spring 2028 start, with recruiting expected to resume in 2027-28 for a Fall 2028 start. Plan accordingly if you need to enroll sooner.
Two admissions points matter. Applications run through DICAS, selecting URI’s Dietetics Future Education Model Graduate Program as an option. And entry requires a didactic verification statement dated within five years of the application deadline — anyone whose statement is older may be required to complete additional coursework. If you finished a didactic programme some time ago and are returning to the field, raise this before applying.
Supervised practice sites sit throughout Rhode Island and include major healthcare institutions across southern New England, so the network extends beyond the state line even though the programme does not.

The verification statement carries a specific condition worth knowing before you enrol. To earn it you must be enrolled in the Dietetics and Applied Nutrition BS programme, complete and meet the academic requirements for every clinical and science course in the didactic sequence, and graduate with a four-year cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better. Passing the degree is not sufficient on its own.
The master’s needs direct enquiry. ACEND granted candidacy status in October 2023, and no full-accreditation decision has been published — the programme remains in candidacy, with a site visit listed on ACEND’s Programs Under Review page for November 8, 2026. Candidacy is a normal step toward accreditation rather than a warning sign, and JWU’s own materials confirm students who enroll during candidacy are considered graduates of an accredited programme once ACEND grants full accreditation; JWU’s first cohort has already graduated under this status. Ask the department for its current status and expected timeline before enrolling.
One historical note relevant to some applicants: Johnson & Wales closed its Denver campus in 2021, and ACEND lists the former Denver Didactic Program in Dietetics as voluntarily closed effective January 29, 2021. Graduates of that programme needing records or verification statements should contact the Providence department directly. Separately, ACEND placed JWU’s bachelor’s DPD on a reduced accreditation reporting term after progress-report reviews in both July 2025 and July 2026 — closer monitoring, not a change to its accredited-through-2030 status, but worth asking about directly.

How to Choose a Nutrition Program in Rhode Island
Two universities, one accredited graduate route
URI’s Future Education Model master’s is currently the only accredited programme in Rhode Island that includes supervised practice. If Johnson & Wales’s candidacy programme achieves accreditation that will change, but plan on what exists rather than what is pending. Applying to programmes outside Rhode Island is sensible regardless, and southern New England has substantial provision within commuting distance.
The five-year verification statement rule
URI requires a didactic verification statement dated within five years of the application deadline, with additional coursework possible beyond that. This is the second state on this site with such a rule, and it catches out career changers and anyone returning after time away. If your statement is ageing, contact the programme before assuming it still stands.
No technician route in state
Rhode Island has no ACEND-accredited dietetic technician programmes at community college level. In most states the NDTR credential offers a shorter route into practice; here it would mean studying elsewhere. That makes the four-year accredited bachelor’s the effective minimum entry point.
The master’s requirement changed in 2024
Since January 1, 2024, the Commission on Dietetic Registration has required a master’s degree in any field, plus a verification statement from an ACEND-accredited programme, to sit for the RDN exam. Both Rhode Island universities responded by developing Future Education Model graduate programmes — URI’s is accredited, JWU’s is in candidacy — so the state’s provision is newer and still settling.

Rhode Island regulates dietetics through the Rhode Island Board of Dietetics Practice. Anyone considering an out-of-state or distance supervised practice programme should confirm with the board that it meets state requirements for practice hours and settings before enrolling, rather than after.
