Which Wisconsin Nutrition Program Fits You
Choose the UW Health Integrated Graduate Program if you want degree and practice together. Graduates receive a Master of Science in Clinical Nutrition and a verification statement, then sit the registration exam — no separate internship match. It is among the oldest continuously running dietetics programmes in the country.
Choose UW–Madison if you want the flagship and an online master’s. Its accredited didactic programme sits within the Nutritional Sciences major, and the department’s own online MS in Clinical Nutrition satisfies the graduate requirement without relocating.
Choose UW–Stout or UW–Green Bay if you want both stages at one university. Each runs an accredited bachelor’s and its own accredited internship, which is unusual outside the largest states.
Choose Milwaukee Area Technical College if you want to work sooner. Its associate leads to the technician credential rather than the RDN — a shorter route into practice given how long the credential now takes.

UW Health Integrated Graduate Program in Nutrition and Dietetics
Based in Madison, this is Wisconsin’s most distinctive offering and has the longest history.

The programme began as the UW Health Dietetic Internship in 1953. In 2020 it was accepted as a Future Education Model demonstration programme — meaning ACEND selected it to help pilot the new standards — and it now combines supervised practice with a Master of Science in Clinical Nutrition. On completion graduates receive both the degree and a verification statement, and are then eligible to sit the CDR registration examination.
Being hospital-based within an academic health system gives clinical depth that a university department cannot always match, and the demonstration-programme status indicates ACEND regarded it as a model worth building the new framework around.
University of Wisconsin–Madison
UW–Madison runs dietetics through its Department of Nutritional Sciences.

The department sets out the route to the credential explicitly: complete the didactic requirements under ACEND’s 2022 standards, earn at least a master’s, complete an accredited internship, pass the national exam, and follow state law. It also makes a point worth repeating — there are many options to complete the master’s and the internship within a single programme, so those two steps need not be sequential.
Its own online MS in Clinical Nutrition is one way to satisfy the graduate requirement, and being online means it need not interrupt work or require relocation.
University of Wisconsin–Stout
UW–Stout in Menomonie runs both an accredited bachelor’s and its own internship.

The internship’s entry requirements are more specific than most and worth reading before you plan around it. Applicants need a master’s degree already in hand, verification of a completed didactic programme, an overall GPA of 3.0 or above and 3.0 or above in professional courses, and recent relevant work experience beyond course requirements — paid or voluntary.
One condition is unusual: your Medical Nutrition Therapy coursework must have been completed no more than four years before you apply. That is a tighter window than the five-year verification statement rules seen elsewhere, and it applies to a specific course rather than the whole qualification. Anyone returning to the field after a break should check this first.
University of Wisconsin–Green Bay
UW–Green Bay runs an accredited bachelor’s, an accredited internship, and online graduate coursework.

UW–Green Bay publishes its programme objectives openly: at least 80 percent of graduates passing the registration exam within one year of first attempt, and 90 percent taking the exam within twelve months of completing. These are ACEND objectives — thresholds the programme commits to rather than reported results — so ask the department for its actual outcome data, which it is required to collect.
The online graduate coursework makes UW–Green Bay one of the more flexible options in the state for the academic component, though supervised practice remains in person.
Other Wisconsin programmes
UW–Stevens Point offers an accredited BS in Dietetics in central Wisconsin.
Mount Mary University in Milwaukee and Viterbo University in La Crosse both offer nutrition and dietetics programmes at private institutions. Our sourcing does not establish their current accreditation level or type, so confirm directly if the credential is your goal.
Milwaukee Area Technical College offers an associate in nutrition and dietetic technology leading to the Nutrition and Dietetic Technician, Registered credential rather than the RDN. Given the 2024 rules lengthened the RDN route considerably, a two-year technician credential is a serious alternative rather than a fallback.
Concordia University Wisconsin and Marquette University offer nutrition within other degrees — human biology with a nutrition concentration and biomedical sciences with a nutritional sciences focus respectively. Neither is an accredited dietetics route, though both suit students heading toward medicine or research.
How to Choose a Nutrition Program in Wisconsin
Five internships is genuinely good supply
Wisconsin has five accredited dietetic internships for a state of its size, including two at universities that also teach the didactic coursework. Nationally, internships are the bottleneck. Here the odds are better than most, though applications still run through D&D Digital and remain competitive.
Check entry conditions before you need them
UW–Stout requires a master’s in hand before the internship begins and a Medical Nutrition Therapy course completed within four years. These are the kind of conditions that decide applications and are easy to discover too late. Ask each internship what it requires at least a year before you intend to apply.
Online options exist for coursework, not practice
UW–Madison’s clinical nutrition master’s and UW–Green Bay’s graduate coursework can both be taken online, which helps with the graduate degree requirement. Supervised practice is in person everywhere, so plan for a period of geographic commitment regardless of how flexible the academic side looks.
The master’s requirement changed in 2024
Since January 1, 2024, the Commission on Dietetic Registration has required a master’s degree in any field, plus a verification statement from an ACEND-accredited programme, to sit for the RDN exam, with at least 1,000 supervised practice hours completed within eight to 24 months depending on whether the programme is full or part-time. Wisconsin’s coordinated and Future Education Model routes address both at once.
Nutrition Licensure and Credentials in Wisconsin
Wisconsin certifies dietitians. State certification renews every two years on 31 October with a $75 fee, while the CDR credential renews on a five-year cycle requiring 75 continuing professional education units.
The national requirements apply alongside: an ACEND verification statement, a master’s degree, supervised practice hours, and a passing exam score.
