Which South Carolina Nutrition Program Fits You
Choose Winthrop if you want the master’s and supervised practice as one admission. Its online master’s is followed by an accredited dietetic internship year of at least 1,000 hours, capped at 21 interns, and a DPD is required first. ACEND lists both Winthrop programs with terms ending December 31, 2027, so confirm renewal.
Choose the University of South Carolina if you want one performance-focused master’s that includes the practice. It takes applicants with any bachelor’s degree and the prerequisites, but it is a new program in ACEND candidacy and has no graduates yet.
Choose Clemson if you want a research university and a food science grounding. Its dietetics emphasis sits within a Food Science and Human Nutrition degree, and its non-thesis M.S. nutrition track pairs the DPD coursework with a master’s degree.
Choose South Carolina State if you want a public HBCU with an ACEND-accredited DPD. The school states it is the only historically Black university in South Carolina with an ACEND-accredited nutrition program, and it offers a hybrid master’s in nutritional sciences that is not an ACEND program.

Clemson runs nutrition through its Department of Food, Nutrition and Packaging Sciences in the College of Agriculture, Forestry and Life Sciences.

Clemson is explicit that the dietetics emphasis is the only one within the degree accredited by ACEND as a Didactic Program in Dietetics. Four emphases, one accredited route — and the degree title distinguishes none of them.
Entry is not automatic. Students selecting the dietetics emphasis must complete a formal application and meet specific criteria, and acceptance into the emphasis constitutes acceptance into the Clemson DPD, with all its policies applying from that point. Only students completing the curriculum in accordance with Clemson’s Declaration of Intent and Verification Statement Policy receive a verification statement.
Clemson also states plainly on its own pages that demand for supervised practice appointments greatly exceeds the number of available positions nationally. That is unusually direct for a university describing its own programme, and it is the right expectation to set.
The non-thesis nutrition track of the master’s is built so that a graduate student can complete the DPD coursework and the master’s degree together in about 1.5 to 2 years, but Clemson has no dietetic internship or coordinated program, and ACEND lists the DPD alone, accredited with a term ending December 31, 2033.

USC in Columbia runs this program through the Department of Exercise Science in the Arnold School of Public Health.

How to Choose a Nutrition Program in South Carolina
Check the emphasis, not the degree
Clemson runs four emphases with one accredited, and South Carolina State runs options within a food management degree. Winthrop’s accredited DPD sits inside a nutrition degree. In every case the accredited route is a subdivision of a broader degree, and the verification statement, not the transcript title, shows which one you took.
The graduate routes are where practice hours sit
South Carolina’s accredited bachelor’s programs are didactic only. Supervised practice comes through Winthrop’s internship, the University of South Carolina’s graduate program, or an internship applied for competitively elsewhere. Given Clemson’s own warning about demand exceeding supply, plan the graduate step from the beginning.
Licensure decides what work you can do
South Carolina licenses dietitians through the state Panel for Dietetics, and the term nutritionist is not licensed here. Only licensed registered dietitians may provide medical nutrition therapy and work in clinical settings. Anyone intending clinical practice needs the licence, not merely a nutrition degree.
The master’s requirement changed in 2024
Since January 1, 2024, the Commission on Dietetic Registration has required a master’s degree in any field, plus a verification statement from an ACEND-accredited programme, to sit for the RDN exam, with at least 1,000 hours of supervised practice.
