Appalachian State University requires the most care. Its accredited dietetics concentration is on campus. Its online offering is a separate nutrition and wellness degree at $204 per credit for residents, which is affordable and flexible but does not lead to the credential. Two degrees, one department, entirely different destinations.
East Carolina University in Greenville and Western Carolina University in Cullowhee both run accredited didactic bachelor’s programmes, serving the eastern and far western ends of the state respectively.
Graduate routes and internships
UNC Greensboro offers the most structured progression. Its combined MS/DI serves students without a graduate degree, while its stand-alone dietetic internship is designed specifically for people who already hold one — an M.S., M.A., M.Ed., or PhD — plus a signed verification statement dated before the internship begins and a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0. Interns do not apply to the graduate school directly. The caution at Meredith is that its online Master of Science is not ACEND-accredited, while its campus master’s is. Both are legitimate degrees; only one supports the credential route. Confirm which programme you are applying to.
UNC Chapel Hill offers an MPH in Nutrition through the Gillings School, accredited by both ACEND and CEPH, in hybrid format combining online and campus learning. Lenoir-Rhyne University in Hickory runs a combined dietetic internship and master’s in coordination with the Solmaz Institute, which addresses child and adolescent obesity. North Carolina requires licensure
UNC Greensboro notes that many states, including North Carolina, require licensure to practise. That is separate from the national RDN credential and additional to it, so budget time and fees for both steps rather than treating the exam as the finish line.
The master’s requirement changed in 2024
Since January 1, 2024, the Commission on Dietetic Registration has required a master’s degree in any field, plus a verification statement from an ACEND-accredited programme, to sit for the RDN exam, with at least 1,000 supervised practice hours. North Carolina’s coordinated and combined routes expect 1,200 or more. The state is well supplied with graduate routes that build the master’s in, which is why the didactic bachelor’s alone should be treated as the first of two or three steps.
Nutrition Licensure and Credentials in North Carolina
