Which North Carolina Nutrition Program Fits You
Choose NC Central if you need to study online and want the credential. Its accredited didactic programme is delivered fully online, which is genuinely uncommon — most online nutrition degrees are not the accredited ones. You will need a computer, microphone, camera, and reliable broadband for two-way class participation.
Choose UNC Greensboro if you are at an unusual stage. It runs the widest set of entry points in the state: an accredited bachelor’s concentration, a combined MS/DI, and a stand-alone internship for people who already hold a graduate degree and a verification statement.
Choose Meredith if you want an integrated route in Raleigh. Its Accelerated Dietitian Nutritionist track builds about 1,040 supervised hours into 47 credits, but the cohort is about a dozen students, and its DPD track and online Advanced Career Track both lead to the separate internship.
Choose UNC Chapel Hill if you want public health alongside the credential. Its hybrid MPH in Nutrition holds both ACEND and CEPH accreditation, combining dietetics eligibility with a public health qualification and a focus on health disparities.

Accredited undergraduate programmes

UNC Greensboro houses the accredited route in the human nutrition and dietetics concentration of its BS in Nutrition. Two other concentrations — nutrition and wellness, and nutrition science — sit under the same degree title and do not produce a verification statement.
North Carolina Central University in Durham delivers its accredited didactic programme fully online, at the state’s public HBCU. This is the standout: an accredited DPD without campus attendance is rare nationally, and it opens the route to students who cannot relocate.
Appalachian State University requires the most care. Its accredited dietetics concentration is on campus. Its online offering is a separate nutrition and wellness degree at $204 per credit for residents, which is affordable and flexible but does not lead to the credential. Two degrees, one department, entirely different destinations.
East Carolina University in Greenville and Western Carolina University in Cullowhee both run accredited didactic bachelor’s programmes, serving the eastern and far western ends of the state respectively.
Graduate routes and internships
UNC Greensboro offers the most structured progression. Its combined MS/DI serves students without a graduate degree, while its stand-alone dietetic internship is designed specifically for people who already hold one — an M.S., M.A., M.Ed., or PhD — plus a signed verification statement dated before the internship begins and a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0. Interns do not apply to the graduate school directly. Meredith College in Raleigh holds three ACEND programs: a master’s-level DPD (36 credits), a graduate program in nutrition and dietetics (the Accelerated track, 47 credits), and a dietetic internship at $15,500 flat. The caution at Meredith is that its online Advanced Career Track is the one master’s without ACEND accreditation, and the dividing line is the track, not the delivery format. Only the Accelerated track builds practice into the degree, and its first cohort was 8 students.
UNC Chapel Hill offers an MPH in Nutrition through the Gillings School, accredited by both ACEND and CEPH, in hybrid format combining online and campus learning. It is research-intensive with funding and assistantship opportunities and dual degree options, and it emphasises socioeconomic factors and health disparities.
Lenoir-Rhyne University in Hickory runs a combined dietetic internship and master’s in coordination with the Solmaz Institute, which addresses child and adolescent obesity. Students complete the didactic portion online, obtain a verification statement, and complete the internship on site — a specialised focus with no equivalent elsewhere in the state.
Programmes to verify
North Carolina State University has no ACEND-accredited program of any kind and says its nutrition pathways do not lead directly to dietetic internships or RDN certification. How to Choose a Nutrition Program in North Carolina
Online does not mean accredited here
This is the single most important thing on the page. NC Central’s online bachelor’s is accredited. App State’s online bachelor’s is not the dietetics concentration. Meredith’s online Advanced Career Track has no ACEND accreditation, while its Accelerated and DPD tracks and its internship do. Three institutions, three different answers — so check the specific programme rather than the institution.

UNC Greensboro has effectively sorted its offerings by where applicants are starting: bachelor’s for school leavers, combined MS/DI for graduates without a master’s, stand-alone internship for those who already hold one. Identifying which of those describes you narrows the field quickly, and the same logic applies statewide.
North Carolina requires licensure
UNC Greensboro notes that many states, including North Carolina, require licensure to practise. That is separate from the national RDN credential and additional to it, so budget time and fees for both steps rather than treating the exam as the finish line.
The master’s requirement changed in 2024
Since January 1, 2024, the Commission on Dietetic Registration has required a master’s degree in any field, plus a verification statement from an ACEND-accredited programme, to sit for the RDN exam, with at least 1,000 supervised practice hours. North Carolina’s coordinated and combined routes expect 1,200 or more. The state is well supplied with graduate routes that build the master’s in, which is why the didactic bachelor’s alone should be treated as the first of two or three steps.
Nutrition Licensure and Credentials in North Carolina
North Carolina requires licensure to practise dietetics. ACEND-accredited programmes satisfy both the state’s education mandate and the CDR’s requirements, but the licence itself is a separate application after credentialing.
