Tufts has exactly one ACEND-accredited program: the combined M.S./Dietetic Internship, run with the Frances Stern Nutrition Center at Tufts Medical Center. It builds at least 2,096 supervised-practice hours into the master’s with sites provided, so there is no separate match after admission, but it requires a DPD verification statement to enter. Every other Friedman degree is a nutrition-science, policy, or communication program that does not lead to RD eligibility on its own.
A cooperative route lets students without a DPD pair a Friedman M.S. with Simmons University’s DPD certificate, which supplies only the coursework; the internship match remains a separate, competitive step. The Friedman School is a stand-alone graduate school on the Boston Health Sciences Campus, not on the Medford campus, and it has no undergraduate degree.

Master of Science, Nutrition (On Campus)
The estimated tuition for the on-campus M.S. in Nutrition is $106,752 ($53,376 a year for two years, or $2,224 per credit equivalent). The program requires 48 credits over four semesters full time, or about three years part time.
M.S. Curriculum
Students choose two of 13 specializations, complete 120 or more hours of experiential learning, and write no thesis. The program is STEM-designated, and applicants need one college chemistry, biology, or physiology course with a B- or better. The former divisions, such as Agriculture, Food and Environment and Biochemical and Molecular Nutrition, are now specializations, not separate degrees. Nothing on the M.S. pages makes an RD claim.
M.S. Admissions
The application checklist lists a 3.0 GPA or above, with priority deadlines of October 15 for spring 2027 and January 15 for fall 2027.
Master of Science, Nutrition (Online)
The estimated tuition for the online M.S. in Nutrition is $66,720 (30 credits at $2,224), plus about $750 a year in fees. It takes about one year full time or two years part time.
The online degree is one program with five specializations: Nutrition Science and Policy; Climate, Sustainability, and Food; Data Analytics and AI in Nutrition; Nutrition Communication; and Humanitarian Assistance, or a custom plan. It includes 120 hours of experiential learning, with deadlines of December 1, April 1, and July 15, and no GPA floor on the program page. The school says it can be completed 100% online without relocating.
You Should Know
Tufts’ tuition page describes an online activity fee covering on-campus programming and a summer residency week, and a wellness fee for online students opting to come to campus for optional in-person classes. The program page names no residency requirement, so confirm whether any campus attendance is required. Whether the classes are synchronous was not found.
Combined Master of Science and Dietetic Internship
The estimated cost of the combined M.S./Dietetic Internship is about $76,304 over two years: $28,152 a year in tuition for 33 credits plus a $20,000 clinical training fee assessed by Tufts Medical Center in four payments (derived, 2026-27). The school calls it a full-time 20-month program.
M.S./Internship Curriculum
The 33 credits include a core of NUTR 315, 316, 204, 203 (or NUTB 206), NUTB 250 and 350, NUTR 374, and a research-oriented Senior Project (NUTR 497), plus three to four electives. There is no thesis, and the capstone work includes a case presentation, journal club, portfolio, legislative assignment, and at least 8 hours of community service.
M.S./Internship Supervised Practice
- At least 2,096 hours, with sites and preceptors provided for the student and no separate match
- Rotations include inpatient acute care at Tufts Medical Center, a NICU, the MGH Weight Center, WIC and public health, renal care, the USDA Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging, and food service
- Optional placements include Joslin, Children’s Hospital, and Kate Farms
The hours are about double the 1,000-hour benchmark. The school describes the program as predominantly in person with a few limited remote rotations and classes, and ACEND says all practice is in person near the program, so the format here is campus.
M.S./Internship Admissions
- A bachelor’s degree, a DPD verification statement, and a cumulative GPA of 3.0 preferred
- DICAS in the spring cycle only ($50 first program, $25 each additional) plus a $70 Tufts fee
- Early Decision deadline October 8, 2026 (passed), regular deadline January 15, 2027 with decisions by March 1 and acceptance by March 15; a Phase II round opens March 11 with applications due April 1
- Fall start only; transfer is limited to 6 credits within five years at a B or better; cohort size was not found
You Should Know
Tufts’ pages give the length as a 20-month program, a timeline running from August orientation through the second May (about 21 to 22 months), and one year of a two-year program in the cost table. The internship page’s cost table is dated 2025-26 and lists the clinical training fee as $10,000 a year, while the footnote and tuition page say $20,000 once. It lists $660 in fees, against $1,860 a year on the tuition page, and its $63,346 total does not reconcile with its components, so it is not used here. The Early Decision round is labeled both Fall 2026 and Fall 2027 on the same page, and the October 8, 2026 deadline fits Fall 2027 entry.
Master of Science, Applied AI for Food and Nutrition
The Applied AI for Food and Nutrition M.S. is a 30-credit, part-time, 100% online degree offered jointly with Tufts’ School of Engineering, launched in September 2026. Its tuition was not clearly stated, and its pages carry no RD content.
Doctor of Philosophy, Nutrition
The Ph.D. is on campus only. Its sticker tuition is $22,500 a year in years one and two and $6,542 a year after, but the Ph.D. FAQ describes a full tuition scholarship plus a $40,000 annual stipend. Credit requirements and time to degree were not found.
Certificates, Dual Degrees, and the Simmons DPD Route
- Online graduate certificates: Developing Healthy Communities; Nutrition Science for Communications Professionals; Nutrition Science for Health Professionals; Sustainable Agriculture and Food Systems; or a build-your-own plan, at $3,246 a course for three courses (about $9,738, derived)
- Dual degrees: M.S. with an MPH (five semesters of tuition, three at Friedman and two at the School of Medicine), with Urban and Environmental Planning (six semesters), and with a Fletcher degree
- M.S. plus the Simmons DPD certificate: as few as two years, coursework only, followed by a separate internship match
- An accelerated M.S. for admitted Tufts or Holy Cross undergraduates, with credits and tuition not found
Tufts’ pages name the Fletcher partner degree as a MAIA in one place and an M.A.L.D. in another, and the MPH route as two years (six semesters) in one place and five semesters of tuition in another. Confirm the structure before planning.
Tuition
Tufts’ published 2026-27 master’s rate is $2,224 per credit for the online M.S. and part-time students in either format, and the on-campus M.S. is $53,376 a year, which equals $2,224 across 24 credits. Tufts is private and charges the same rate regardless of residency.
- On-campus M.S.: $106,752 for 48 credits, plus fees of $1,860 a year (technology $250, health administration $1,200, activity and supply $410), or about $110,472 over two years, excluding insurance
- Online M.S.: $66,720 for 30 credits, plus $750 a year in fees, or $67,470 for one year and $68,220 for two
- M.S./Internship: $28,152 a year, up about 3% from $27,336, plus the $20,000 clinical training fee, for about $76,304 in tuition and clinical fee or $80,024 with fees (derived over two years)
- Ph.D.: $22,500 a year in years one and two, $6,542 after, offset by tuition scholarship and a $40,000 stipend
Be aware that:
Tufts says satisfactory completion of the master’s requires two years of tuition. The M.S./Internship works out to about $1,706 per credit (derived), below the $2,224 degree rate, but the $20,000 clinical fee brings the total back near the online master’s cost. Stipends for master’s students come from grant-funded research roles, teaching assistantships are not linked to tuition scholarships, and amounts were not found. Official figures are on Tufts’ tuition and fees page.
Why Choose This Nutrition Program?
Best suited for students who want a stand-alone graduate nutrition school with a broad set of specializations, or who already hold a DPD verification statement and want an integrated hospital-based route to the credential in Boston.
The cost verdict depends on the goal. The combined M.S./Internship comes to about $76,300 for 2,096 practice hours and a master’s, while the on-campus M.S. is about $106,800 for 120 hours of experiential learning, and the online M.S. is about $66,700. The comparison favors the internship only if the credential is the goal.
For the credential, the entry gate is the DPD verification statement and a spring DICAS application, with no separate match after admission. Career changers without a DPD can add Simmons’ DPD certificate, but that still ends in a competitive internship match.
For everything else, the online M.S., the AI degree, the certificates, and the Ph.D. serve policy, communication, climate, and research careers, and none leads to RD eligibility.
Accreditation
Tufts is accredited by the New England Commission of Higher Education (NECHE), which continued its accreditation in November 2023 with the next comprehensive evaluation in spring 2033. Institutional accreditation matters for transfer credit, graduate admission, and federal financial aid.
ACEND’s directory lists one Tufts program: the Frances Stern Nutrition Center Dietetic Internship, with initial accreditation in 1936, a term ending December 31, 2033, and an M.S. degree offered. ACEND’s July 2026 decisions list full and continued accreditation after a site visit, under the spelling Francis Stern. ACEND types it as a Dietetic Internship integrated with the master’s, not a Coordinated Program or Future Education Model program, and the Friedman School states it is the only ACEND-accredited program it offers.
The internship page says the next review is scheduled for fall 2025, which is out of date given the 2026 decision. The on-campus and online M.S. degrees, the Applied AI M.S., the Ph.D., and the certificates carry no ACEND accreditation, which is normal for science and policy degrees. A graduate of the M.S./Internship completes the degree and supervised practice and can sit for the CDR exam, while a graduate of any other Tufts degree is not eligible on that degree alone.
