Six Kentucky institutions offer nutrition or dietetics degrees. Resident tuition and fees run from about $9,807 at Kentucky State to $14,177 at the University of Kentucky (2026–27), with the other universities clustered between about $10,650 and $12,300 where profiled for 2026–27. The Council on Postsecondary Education caps increases, holding the average rise to 3.8% in 2025–26 and 1.9% in 2026–27.
Four of the six hold ACEND accreditation. Most are didactic programs, so most Kentucky students complete accredited coursework and then compete for supervised practice. Two exceptions are worth knowing about: the University of Kentucky’s Accelerated Coordinated Program, and Western Kentucky’s dietetic internship, which is combined with an MBA. Kentucky requires licensure to practise dietetics.

Which Kentucky Nutrition Program Fits You
Choose Western Kentucky if you want the master’s requirement met through a business degree. Its dietetic internship is combined with an MBA and a Graduate Certificate in Dietetic Practice, with 870 practice hours plus 180 alternate hours and up to 10 interns a year, and a DPD is required first. Its pages disagree on whether it admits a class in 2027–28, and ACEND placed it on a reduced accreditation term in July 2026, so confirm both with the director.
Choose the University of Kentucky if you are a UK dietetics student who wants a coordinated option. Its Accelerated Coordinated Program admits about 14 students a class from its own B.S. Dietetics program and builds the master’s and supervised practice into the degree, and ACEND lists it as accredited through December 2031. Online master’s degrees and a culinary medicine certificate are also available.
Choose Murray State if you want the DPD, the internship, and the master’s from one department. Its dietetic internship is also a 33-credit master’s, and a separate online master’s without the internship is aimed at people not seeking the RD credential. The school’s accreditation dates conflict with ACEND’s directory, which lists terms ending June 30, 2029.
Choose Eastern Kentucky if cost matters and you want an accredited bachelor’s. Eastern Kentucky charges about $12,066 a year in 2026–27 tuition and fees in state against $14,177 at the University of Kentucky, for accredited didactic coursework that produces a verification statement.
Choose Kentucky State if food systems and agriculture are the draw. Its Nutritional Sciences and Food Systems option sits within an agricultural college at Kentucky’s public HBCU, at the lowest tuition in the state. It is not an accredited dietetics route.
Kentucky Nutrition Schools
University of Kentucky
UK houses nutrition in the Department of Dietetics and Human Nutrition, within the Martin-Gatton College of Agriculture, Food and Environment in Lexington. Its Nutritional Sciences degrees are in the College of Medicine.

WKU runs nutrition through its Department of Applied Human Sciences in Bowling Green and holds ACEND accreditation for a DPD and a dietetic internship.

Admission to the dietetics program is separate from WKU admission, with a 3.0 GPA over 30 credits, specified courses, and an ACT of 20 or SAT of 950. The internship needs a DPD, a 3.0 GPA, and a DICAS application, and does not require the GRE. ACEND placed it on a reduced term after a progress report in July 2026, and the school’s pages disagree on whether admissions pause for 2027–28.

Murray State runs nutrition through its Nutrition and Dietetics program in far western Kentucky.

In-state tuition is $5,325 a semester in 2026–27, about $12,066 a year with fees. It is didactic only, so plan for a master’s and a separate supervised practice application.

Morehead State University
Morehead State in eastern Kentucky has no dietetics major and no ACEND-accredited program, and it does not appear in ACEND’s Kentucky directory or on its 2017 through 2026 decisions pages.

Students in eastern Kentucky who want the RD route should look at Eastern Kentucky, the University of Kentucky, or Murray State. In-state undergraduate tuition and fees are about $10,654 a year in 2026–27 across the university, not a dietetics-program figure.
Kentucky State University
Kentucky State in Frankfort is the state’s public HBCU, and offers nutrition within its College of Agriculture, Health and Natural Resources.
- Option in Nutritional Sciences and Food Systems — within the agriculture curriculum
The agricultural framing is the distinguishing feature. The option integrates nutrition with food systems and sustainability rather than clinical practice, which suits students heading toward food policy, extension work, community food security, or graduate study.
It is not an ACEND-accredited dietetics programme and does not produce a verification statement or lead to the RDN. At about $9,807 it is the lowest published rate among Kentucky’s public universities.
How to Choose a Nutrition Program in Kentucky
Kentucky is largely a didactic state
With the exception of UK’s Accelerated Coordinated Program, which is open to its own dietetics students, Kentucky’s accredited programmes provide coursework and expect you to secure supervised practice separately. That makes internship applications the decisive step, and WKU’s own guidance — a 3.3 to 3.5 GPA plus relevant experience — is a fair benchmark for what competitive looks like. Apply broadly, including out of state.
Reciprocity agreements widen your options
The Council on Postsecondary Education has approved tuition reciprocity between selected Kentucky public institutions and institutions in Indiana, Ohio, and West Virginia, letting Kentucky residents attend those out-of-state schools at in-state rates. Given how few supervised practice places exist inside Kentucky, that materially expands where you can look without paying non-resident tuition.
Cost differences are modest but real
The spread between Kentucky’s cheapest and most expensive accredited undergraduate programme is several thousand dollars a year — Eastern Kentucky at about $12,066 against UK at $14,177. Over four years that is a meaningful sum for coursework that produces the same verification statement, so weigh location and internship support alongside institutional reputation.
Where you can start, and where you will end up
All four accredited programmes take students from high school. The University of Kentucky’s online DPD completer is open to bachelor’s holders, but otherwise Kentucky offers little for a career changer holding a degree in another field. Someone in that position would need to complete didactic coursework somewhere — either as a second undergraduate degree here or through a post-baccalaureate route in a neighbouring state, which the reciprocity agreements make more affordable than they first appear.
The master’s requirement changed in 2024
Since January 1, 2024, the Commission on Dietetic Registration has required a master’s degree in any field, plus a verification statement from an ACEND-accredited programme, to sit for the RDN exam. WKU’s internship addresses this directly by building the master’s in. Elsewhere in Kentucky you will need to plan the graduate step separately, either during or after supervised practice.
Nutrition Licensure and Credentials in Kentucky
Kentucky requires dietitians to obtain state licensure to practise. Both Murray State and Western Kentucky state this directly in their own programme materials: the licence is separate from the national RDN credential and is required in addition to it.
The CDR requirements apply alongside — an ACEND verification statement, a master’s degree, supervised practice hours, and a passing exam score. Confirm current Kentucky licensure requirements and fees with the state board before relying on them.
Before applying anywhere in Kentucky, verify three things directly with the school: whether you qualify for the University of Kentucky’s Accelerated Coordinated Program, which is open to its own dietetics students, which track or concentration within a broader degree carries the accreditation, since Murray State, UK, and Western Kentucky all house dietetics inside larger majors, and that Morehead State offers a nutrition certificate rather than an accredited dietetics program.
