Its distance option is genuinely distinctive but demanding: distance students are responsible for building their own supervised practice network at sites roughly 100 miles or more from Ypsilanti, and virtual rotations require advance approval from the clinical coordinator. Michigan State University pairs its accredited bachelor’s with a Master of Science in Nutrition and Dietetics combined with the dietetic internship. Having both under one roof means a student can complete the didactic requirement and the graduate degree without changing institutions, then apply for supervised practice — including Wayne State’s coordinated programme a short distance away. As a private institution it discounts substantially, so compare net price rather than the published figure before ruling it out on cost.
Andrews University in Berrien Springs runs a BS in Nutrition Science and Dietetics with separate dietetics and nutrition science emphases. Only the dietetics emphasis is the accredited route — confirm which you are entering, since the degree title covers both.
Michigan State University also belongs here for its undergraduate programme, which includes all required didactic coursework and is the entry point into its combined master’s and internship. Its undergraduate admission expectation of a 3.4 GPA is higher than most Michigan dietetics programmes, so applicants with a weaker record may find Central Michigan or Western Michigan more accessible while producing the same verification statement.
All five of these programmes lead to the same place: a verification statement and then a separate application for supervised practice. What differs is price, location, and how much support the department gives with internship applications. Ask each department directly what proportion of its recent graduates matched, and where — that varies far more than curriculum does, and it is rarely published.
Graduate-entry routes
The University of Michigan in Ann Arbor offers Master of Science and Master of Public Health degrees in Nutritional Sciences with a didactic programme option, meaning the accredited coursework sits at graduate rather than undergraduate level. That suits someone arriving with a bachelor’s in another field who wants the didactic requirement and a graduate degree together, though supervised practice remains separate.
At $18,346 it is the most expensive resident option in the state, and admission to Michigan is competitive independent of the nutrition programme. Confirm exactly how the didactic option is structured within the degree, and what prerequisites it assumes.
The public health framing is worth weighing on its own terms. An MPH in Nutritional Sciences points toward population-level work — policy, programme design, epidemiology — in a way a clinically oriented dietetics degree does not. For someone whose interest is food systems or health disparities rather than individual patient care, that framing may matter more than the accreditation route.
Note also that graduate-entry didactic programmes solve a specific problem. Someone holding a bachelor’s in biology, psychology, or an unrelated field would otherwise face a second undergraduate degree to obtain a verification statement. Wayne State’s half-price online coordinated programme is a real saving, but confirm how supervised practice is arranged for online students. Andrews University runs dietetics and nutrition science emphases under one degree, and Wayne State offers both BS and BA versions of its nutrition degree. Central Michigan at $15,420 against the University of Michigan at $18,346 is a meaningful gap for coursework that produces the same verification statement, and it compounds across four years. Michigan’s public tuition rose 4.43 percent on average for 2025–26, so expect further movement. Western Michigan is worth noting for out-of-state applicants: its non-resident rate of $19,736 is far closer to in-state than the two-to-three times ratio typical elsewhere.

Grand Valley and the University of Michigan are graduate entry only. The master’s requirement changed in 2024
Since January 1, 2024, the Commission on Dietetic Registration has required a master’s degree in any field, plus a verification statement from an ACEND-accredited programme, to sit for the RDN exam, with at least 1,000 supervised practice hours. Central Michigan states the practical consequence plainly: you now need the graduate degree in hand or in progress before you can apply for an internship at all.
Nutrition Licensure and Credentials in Michigan
State regulation of dietetics varies considerably, and Michigan’s position differs from states with full practice-act licensure. Confirm current requirements with the relevant Michigan agency before assuming either that a licence is required or that the national credential alone is sufficient for the work you intend to do.
The national CDR requirements apply regardless: an ACEND verification statement, a master’s degree, supervised practice hours, and a passing exam score, with 75 continuing professional education hours every five years to maintain registration.
