Kentucky Nutrition Programs & Online Degrees

Six Kentucky institutions offer nutrition or dietetics degrees. Resident tuition and fees run from about $9,807 at Kentucky State to $13,952 at the University of Kentucky, with the regional universities clustered between $10,320 and $11,872. The Council on Postsecondary Education caps increases, holding the average rise to 3.8% in 2025–26 and 1.9% in 2026–27.

Five of the six hold ACEND accreditation, all at the didactic level, so most Kentucky students complete accredited coursework and then compete for supervised practice. Western Kentucky is the exception worth knowing about: its dietetic internship is combined with an MBA. Kentucky requires licensure to practise dietetics.

Which Kentucky Nutrition Program Fits You

Choose Western Kentucky if you want management credentials alongside the clinical one. Its dietetic internship is a combined master’s programme: interns enrol in both a Dietetic Practice Graduate Certificate and an MBA, complete 1,050 supervised practice hours plus 160 hours of alternative learning, and graduate eligible for the RDN exam with a business degree in hand. Nothing else in Kentucky pairs the two.

Choose the University of Kentucky if you want the largest department and a coordinated option. Its Department of Dietetics and Human Nutrition has operated a Coordinated Program in Dietetics, which would remove the internship match — confirm its current status, since Kentucky is otherwise a didactic-only state.

Choose Murray State if you want two tracks under one degree. Its BS in Nutrition offers a dietetics track carrying accreditation through June 2028 and a separate nutrition and food track for students not pursuing the credential.

Choose Eastern Kentucky or Morehead State if cost matters and you want an accredited bachelor’s. Both sit around $10,400 in state, roughly $3,500 below the University of Kentucky, for accredited didactic coursework that produces the same verification statement.

Choose Kentucky State if food systems and agriculture are the draw. Its Nutritional Sciences and Food Systems option sits within an agricultural college at Kentucky’s public HBCU, at the lowest tuition in the state. It is not an accredited dietetics route.

Kentucky Nutrition Schools

University of Kentucky

UK houses nutrition in the Department of Dietetics and Human Nutrition, within the School of Human Environmental Sciences in the College of Agriculture, Food and Environment.

  • BS in Dietetics — with didactic and coordinated programme options
  • BS in Human Nutrition — a broader nutrition degree
  • MS Nutritional Sciences — molecular and biochemical nutrition, or community nutrition concentrations

UK is the state’s research flagship and the department is its largest. The two undergraduate degrees are distinct: the dietetics degree is the accredited route, while human nutrition is broader and does not by itself produce a verification statement. Check which one you are applying to, because the department offers both and the names overlap.

One point needs direct confirmation. UK has operated an ACEND-accredited Coordinated Program in Dietetics, which would make it the only coordinated route in Kentucky and would remove the internship match entirely. Our most recent documentation of that accreditation is several years old, and at least one national directory currently lists Kentucky as having no coordinated programs. Contact the department before assuming the coordinated track is available.

Western Kentucky University

WKU runs nutrition through its Department of Applied Human Sciences in Bowling Green, and holds ACEND accreditation at both undergraduate and graduate level.

  • BS Hospitality Management and Dietetics, nutrition and dietetics concentration — completes the accredited coursework
  • Dietetic Internship — a combined master’s programme with a Business Leadership concentration
  • Dietetic Practice Graduate Certificate — open only to students accepted into the internship

The internship structure is unusual and genuinely valuable. Interns enrol simultaneously in the graduate certificate and an MBA, completing 1,050 hours of supervised practice plus 160 hours of alternative learning. Graduates leave eligible for the RDN exam and holding a business master’s, which suits anyone heading toward food service management, clinical leadership, or private practice.

WKU is candid about competition. It advises that entrance to internships is highly competitive and that an undergraduate GPA of 3.3 to 3.5, alongside relevant work or volunteer experience, aids preparation. Students apply in their final undergraduate year and complete internships after graduating.

Getting into the programme is itself a gate, and the requirements are specific. Admission to WKU does not admit you to Nutrition and Dietetics: you need a minimum 3.0 GPA across at least 30 college credit hours, including anatomy and physiology, introductory statistics, and fundamentals of general chemistry each at C or better, plus Human Nutrition at B or better, and a composite ACT of 20 or SAT of 950. Applications are processed by the programme director at the end of each autumn and spring semester.

Murray State University

Murray State runs its Didactic Program in Dietetics through the School of Nursing and Health Professions in far western Kentucky.

  • BS in Nutrition — with a dietetics track and a nutrition and food track

The DPD received ACEND accreditation through June 2028 following a site review in March 2020, which gives it a longer runway than most. The two tracks under the single Nutrition major serve different destinations: dietetics for the credential, nutrition and food for broader roles.

Murray State also gates entry in two stages. Students are first admitted to the Nutrition and Foods track on acceptance to the university; once they have completed at least 45 credit hours and hold a GPA of 3.00 or above, they may apply to switch to the Dietetics track. Enrolling in the nutrition degree does not put you on the accredited route.

Murray State states directly that Kentucky graduates must obtain licensure to practise, and that DPD completers are eligible to apply to accredited supervised practice programmes. Programme outcome data is available on request rather than published.

Eastern Kentucky University

EKU offers dietetics through its applied human sciences programmes in Richmond, south of Lexington.

  • BS Food and Nutrition, dietetics concentration — accredited, 120 credit hours

The curriculum covers medical nutrition therapy and community nutrition with hands-on experience in food service management and nutrition counselling. Admission requires a 2.5 GPA, which is lower than several other Kentucky programmes and makes it more accessible for students whose early record is mixed.

At about $10,440 in resident tuition and fees it is among the least expensive accredited routes in the state. It is didactic only, so plan for a master’s and a separate supervised practice application.

Morehead State University

Morehead State in eastern Kentucky offers an accredited dietetics bachelor’s serving a largely rural region.

  • BS Dietetics — accredited Didactic Program in Dietetics

At roughly $10,444 in resident tuition and fees it sits alongside Eastern Kentucky as one of the lower-cost accredited options. Eastern Kentucky’s Appalachian setting also means graduates are positioned for rural and community nutrition work, where demand is persistent.

Our sourcing for Morehead State’s programme details is a national directory rather than the university’s own materials, so confirm the current accreditation status and curriculum directly with the department before applying.

Geography is worth weighing here. Morehead sits about an hour east of Lexington, closer to the West Virginia line than to Louisville, so supervised practice placements will realistically be in eastern Kentucky or across the state border. The reciprocity agreement with West Virginia institutions is therefore more useful from Morehead than from most Kentucky campuses.

Kentucky State University

Kentucky State in Frankfort is the state’s public HBCU, and offers nutrition within its College of Agriculture, Health and Natural Resources.

  • Option in Nutritional Sciences and Food Systems — within the agriculture curriculum

The agricultural framing is the distinguishing feature. The option integrates nutrition with food systems and sustainability rather than clinical practice, which suits students heading toward food policy, extension work, community food security, or graduate study.

It is not an ACEND-accredited dietetics programme and does not produce a verification statement or lead to the RDN. At about $9,807 it is the lowest published rate among Kentucky’s public universities.

How to Choose a Nutrition Program in Kentucky

Kentucky is largely a didactic state

With the possible exception of UK’s coordinated track, Kentucky’s accredited programmes provide coursework and expect you to secure supervised practice separately. That makes internship applications the decisive step, and WKU’s own guidance — a 3.3 to 3.5 GPA plus relevant experience — is a fair benchmark for what competitive looks like. Apply broadly, including out of state.

Reciprocity agreements widen your options

The Council on Postsecondary Education has approved tuition reciprocity between selected Kentucky public institutions and institutions in Indiana, Ohio, and West Virginia, letting Kentucky residents attend those out-of-state schools at in-state rates. Given how few supervised practice places exist inside Kentucky, that materially expands where you can look without paying non-resident tuition.

Cost differences are modest but real

The spread between Kentucky’s cheapest and most expensive accredited undergraduate programme is roughly $3,500 a year — Eastern Kentucky and Morehead State around $10,400 against UK at $13,952. Over four years that is a meaningful sum for coursework that produces the same verification statement, so weigh location and internship support alongside institutional reputation.

Where you can start, and where you will end up

All five accredited programmes take students from high school, and none is graduate-entry, so Kentucky is straightforward for a school leaver but offers little for a career changer holding a degree in another field. Someone in that position would need to complete didactic coursework somewhere — either as a second undergraduate degree here or through a post-baccalaureate route in a neighbouring state, which the reciprocity agreements make more affordable than they first appear.

The master’s requirement changed in 2024

Since January 1, 2024, the Commission on Dietetic Registration has required a master’s degree in any field, plus a verification statement from an ACEND-accredited programme, to sit for the RDN exam. WKU’s internship addresses this directly by building the master’s in. Elsewhere in Kentucky you will need to plan the graduate step separately, either during or after supervised practice.

Nutrition Licensure and Credentials in Kentucky

Kentucky requires dietitians to obtain state licensure to practise. Both Murray State and Western Kentucky state this directly in their own programme materials: the licence is separate from the national RDN credential and is required in addition to it.

The CDR requirements apply alongside — an ACEND verification statement, a master’s degree, supervised practice hours, and a passing exam score. Confirm current Kentucky licensure requirements and fees with the state board before relying on them.

Before applying anywhere in Kentucky, verify three things directly with the school: whether the University of Kentucky’s coordinated track is currently available, since it would be the state’s only route avoiding the internship match, which track or concentration within a broader degree carries the accreditation, since Murray State, UK, and Western Kentucky all house dietetics inside larger majors, and the current accreditation status at Morehead State, where our sourcing is a directory listing. Individual school profiles for these programs are in progress and will be linked here as they publish.
