Which Alaska Nutrition Program Fits You
Choose the BS in Dietetics if you are starting out, wherever you live. It is the accredited didactic programme and it is delivered fully online, with non-resident tuition waived for online courses. That combination is rare and puts an accredited degree within reach from outside Alaska at close to resident cost.
Choose the MS in Dietetics and Nutrition if you already hold a bachelor’s. Its pre-professional track is for applicants with a didactic verification statement or the prerequisite coursework, and it integrates 1,000 hours of supervised experiential learning across two years full-time, so there is no separate internship application.
Choose the master’s RDN track if you are already credentialed. UAA runs a didactic-only version for practising registered dietitians who want the graduate degree without repeating supervised practice.
Consider the technician credential. UAA states that its BS in Dietetics prepares students to sit the Nutrition and Dietetics Technician, Registered exam. In a state with one accredited programme and rotations spread across enormous distances, a credential reachable at bachelor’s level has practical weight.

Sites are primarily in Anchorage and Fairbanks but extend to Kodiak, Kenai, Soldotna, Sitka, Juneau, Bethel, Palmer, Wasilla, Kotzebue, Nome, and Utqiagvik, with placements in other states possible by approval. Most are in health care settings. Travel and housing for rotations are explicit additional costs, and in Alaska that is not a trivial line item.
Two admissions points. Entry to the professional phase of the bachelor’s happens in the spring of the second year of coursework, with a March 15 deadline, and applicants must meet a programme advisor beforehand. Supervised practice ties you to Alaska
The coursework travels; the rotations largely do not. Placements run across the state including remote communities, and out-of-state rotations require approval rather than being standard. Anyone planning to use UAA’s online bachelor’s from the Lower 48 should think through the supervised practice stage early, and consider whether they will pursue it at UAA or elsewhere.
Western exchange programmes apply too
UAA participates in the Western Undergraduate Exchange, which sets tuition at 150 percent of the resident lower-division rate, and the Western Regional Graduate Program, under which graduate students from participating western states pay the resident rate outright. For graduate applicants from those states, WRGP is the more valuable of the two.
The master’s requirement changed in 2024
Since January 1, 2024, the Commission on Dietetic Registration has required a master’s degree in any field, plus a verification statement from an ACEND-accredited programme, to sit for the RDN exam. Nutrition Licensure and Credentials in Alaska
