Department of Family and Consumer Sciences, College of Agriculture and Applied Sciences • Martin, TN • Campus and Online • $669/Credit In-State at Campus Rates (Graduate, Public)
The University of Tennessee at Martin offers a dietetics pathway that the school is closing, plus non-RD nutrition options:
- B.S. in Family and Consumer Sciences, Dietetics concentration (the ACEND-accredited Didactic Program in Dietetics, being phased out)
- Dietetic Internship with an M.S. in Family and Consumer Sciences, Dietetics concentration (36 credits; the school says it is not accepting new students and the internship concludes in June 2027)
- B.S. in Family and Consumer Sciences, Food and Nutrition concentration (123 credits, not an RD route) and a nutrition minor
- A planned Future Education Model graduate program in nutrition and dietetics, which is not yet accredited
Program Tracks Overview
| Program | Est. Tuition | Est. Duration | Credit Hours |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dietetic Internship with M.S. | $24,084 at campus graduate rates (derived, in-state); the online rate was not found | 2 years; supervised practice about 10 months | 36 |
| B.S. Family and Consumer Sciences, Dietetics concentration (DPD) | $11,148 a year in tuition and fees (derived, in-state) | 4 years | 120 to 121 (derived from a 2023-24 catalog) |
| B.S. Family and Consumer Sciences, Food and Nutrition concentration | $11,148 a year in tuition and fees (derived, in-state) | 4 years | 123 |
The lead fact is that both stages of the dietetics route exist today but both are closing, and the school says its dietetics concentration is not taking new students who cannot finish by December 2028. The internship and master’s concentration is not accepting new students, and the internship concludes in June 2027. A replacement graduate program is in the application stage with ACEND and does not appear in the directory.
The degree is a B.S. in Family and Consumer Sciences, not a nutrition and dietetics degree. Applicants should ask the department what is open to them, rather than rely on the school’s admissions text, which still carries deadlines from 2023.

Dietetic Internship with M.S. in Family and Consumer Sciences
The internship and master’s is 36 credits: 18 in family and consumer sciences, 6 in research, and 12 in supervised practice. At the campus graduate rate of $669 per credit it would cost $24,084 in-state or $36,180 out-of-state (derived); the school’s own page quotes $7,320 a year, which matches no 2026-27 figure and covers only 24 of the 36 credits. Cohorts were limited to 10 interns a year, matched through DICAS.
- Admission to the M.S. asked for a 2.50 GPA and a GRE score, and the internship a 3.0 GPA and a DPD verification statement or intent to complete
- Placements are in Nashville, Knoxville, Memphis, Chattanooga, Jackson, and Columbia, and applicants were told they may have to relocate
- Its application pages still show 2023 deadlines and a 2023 footer, and carry unfilled template wording
- A nutrition therapy concentration is described, with a non-thesis research poster instead of a thesis
You Should Know
ACEND’s 2025 decisions page lists the DPD closing June 30, 2028 and the internship January 25, 2029, while the live directory and the school’s DPD page give the reverse, and the school says the internship ends in June 2027. The school also states graduation in May 2026 on a page that describes practice running to May 2027.
Bachelor of Science in Family and Consumer Sciences, Dietetics Concentration
The DPD is the accredited program, and the school says it ends on January 25, 2029. New students are accepted only if they can finish by December 2028, under the 2024-25 catalog or earlier. Students who cannot are directed to the Food and Nutrition concentration, which earns no verification statement. The concentration has no program record in the 2025-26 or 2026-27 catalogs, though the major page still lists it.
- Entry needs a 3.0 GPA, a C or better in biology, chemistry, and nutrition courses, an application packet, and an interview
- Tuition and fees are $5,574 a semester in-state, $11,148 a year (derived), and $8,594 out-of-state, with no dietetics differential found
- Estimated extras include liability insurance, a background check of $60, and lab costs
Food and Nutrition Concentration and Nutrition Minor
The Food and Nutrition concentration is 123 credits aimed at food science, child nutrition, and food service management, with no ACEND accreditation or verification statement. The nutrition minor is about 18 to 19 credits (derived). Sports nutrition appears only as a single graduate course.
Tuition
UT Martin is public, so residency changes the price. These are 2026-27 campus course rates.
- Undergraduate: $5,574 a semester in-state and $8,594 out-of-state at 12 credits, including a $15 media fee
- Graduate: $669 per credit in-state, $6,021 at 9 credits, and $9,041 out-of-state at 9 credits; the printed out-of-state one-credit total of $986 is wrong, and $1,005 is correct (derived)
- An online graduate rate sheet was not found, so the master’s figures assume campus rates
- One-time internship costs include a $600 fee, application and matching fees, DICAS, a student membership, and books, and the school estimates $1,455 to $1,775 in total
Be aware that:
The school’s program page cost figures are stale. Official figures are on the university’s bursar pages.
Why Choose This Nutrition Program?
This program is relevant mainly to current UT Martin students already in the dietetics concentration or internship, and to readers comparing the options the school is replacing.
The bundled design built the master’s into the internship so a graduate met the graduate-degree requirement. The honest limit is that both programs are closing, the master’s concentration is closed to new students, the replacement is not yet accredited, and the school’s pages are inconsistent about dates and costs.
If you are choosing where to start, ask about the Fall 2027 graduate program and confirm its ACEND status in writing. If you want food and nutrition work without the credential, the Food and Nutrition concentration is open.
Accreditation
The University of Tennessee at Martin is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges. Institutional accreditation matters for transfer credit, graduate admission, and federal financial aid.
ACEND’s live directory for Tennessee lists the Didactic Program in Dietetics, with initial accreditation on August 1, 1975 and a term ending January 25, 2029, and the Dietetic Internship, with initial accreditation on December 1, 1994 and a term ending June 30, 2028, both with closure pending. ACEND’s decisions show the DPD on probation in 2020 and removed from it, a progress report decision in 2022, and a change to require a graduate degree for the internship in 2022.
The 2025 decisions page lists both programs as voluntarily closing under teach-out plans, with the dates in the opposite order from the directory. The Programs Under Review page was not located. A graduate of the internship and M.S. is eligible for the CDR exam; a graduate of the DPD holds a verification statement only.
