Roughly 120 hours of experiential learning begin inside coursework itself, through case studies, role playing, and simulations tied to competencies from the didactic classes. The rotation model is also unusual. In semesters three and four, students are placed in teams of four or five and spend two days a week at rotation sites while attending classes the other three. In semesters five through seven they move into full rotations across various facilities. Learning in a small team rather than alone is uncommon and suits students who want more support during early placements.
SDSU notes that its programmes draw substantial support from sites and preceptors across South Dakota, which matters in a state with a dispersed population and few large health systems. Expect placements around the state rather than concentrated in one city.

SDSU charges non-residents $387.00 per credit hour against $266.60 for residents — a premium of about 45 percent, far narrower than the two-to-three times ratio common at public universities. It also charges Western Undergraduate Exchange students the same rate as ordinary non-residents, so there is no WUE advantage to pursue. For out-of-state students, South Dakota is comparatively affordable without needing an exchange programme.
Minnesota reciprocity has been wound down
South Dakota cancelled its tuition reciprocity agreement with Minnesota in January 2024.
